I have spent all of my
working life as an ‘educator’in the United Kingdom and have taught 5 year olds
to young adults. Being a teacher and headteacher has been a challenge as I have
seen the increasing drive of governments to focus upon standards at the expense
of a love of and enjoyment to learn. I just loved reading Ryan
Wilson’s book Let that be a Lesson’. It embodies my views entirely and I would
recommend this for all parents to read. But there have been many ‘highs’ when I
see pupils grow in confidence and are disappointed to finish a lesson. My
stories do have underlying themes and with the Secret Cottage series it is the
valuing and celebration of our multi ethnic links. To teachers who may be
reading this resist the temptation to use my books as ‘class readers’. They
should be read voluntarily by anyone and not allowed to be viewed by readers as
,coercive fiction. Happy Reading.
